If you’ve explored the abandoned Jinzhou mine shafts in mid-game Wuthering Waves, you’ve almost certainly run face first into Lifer, the hulking axe-wielding boss that one-shots unsuspecting players before they even get a hit off. I spent three straight hours getting wiped by his spinning attacks last week before I finally cracked the code on how to defeat lifer wuthering waves, even with a mostly F2P team. This guide pulls from my own 12 clear runs, plus input from top-ranked CN server players, to cut out all the trial and error so you can beat him on your first try.
First: Study Lifer’s Core Attack Patterns to Avoid One-Shot Damage
Most players wipe to Lifer because they don’t take 2 minutes to learn his very clear attack tells before jumping in. He only has 4 core attacks in phase 1, and each has a predictable windup that gives you plenty of time to react. His red charge attack is the only move that can one-shot you even if you have 20k+ HP, so you need to memorize its tell first: he slams his axe on the ground twice, leans back, and glows red for 1.2 seconds before charging straight forward. Dodging sideways works far better than dodging backward here, since his charge covers 20+ meters of ground in a straight line.
His other attacks are far less deadly, but still catch new players off guard. His 360-degree spinning axe move has 3 full rotations, with the third rotation having a 50% wider hitbox than the first two, so don’t rush in to attack until he plants his axe back on the ground. His ranged axe throw bounces off walls twice, so if you’re playing a ranged DPS, stay in open space instead of hiding in tunnel corners to avoid stray damage. I used to waste 2 revive items per run just from misjudging the spin attack’s range, so don’t make that same mistake.
Optimal Team Comps to Defeat Lifer in Wuthering Waves for All Playstyles
You don’t need a full roster of maxed 5-star characters to beat Lifer, but picking the right team for your playstyle will cut your clear time in half. For melee players running mostly F2P units, the best comp is Jiyan (DPS), Baizhi (Healer), Chixia (Sub DPS). Jiyan’s rock shields absorb up to 2 of Lifer’s regular hits without breaking, so you can get more DPS uptime without dodging every single attack. Baizhi’s burst heals through the AOE chip damage from his spinning attack, and Chixia’s fire DoT ticks even when you’re dodging, so you never lose damage output between attack windows.
If you prefer ranged play, go for Verina (DPS), Jianxin (Support), Sanhua (Healer). Verina’s long-range basic attacks let you stay completely out of Lifer’s charge path for most of the fight, and Jianxin’s resistance buff cuts the damage from stray axe throws by 30% so you don’t have to heal as often. Don’t bring any Spectro damage units for this fight, by the way: Lifer has a hidden 40% Spectro resistance that most players don’t find out about until they’re doing 1/3 less damage than expected.
No matter what comp you run, make sure you have these 3 buffs active to make the fight as smooth as possible:
- Physical or Fusion damage boost: Lifer takes 25% extra damage from both these damage types, so run a support that amplifies either if you have the option
- Shield or 15%+ damage reduction buff: You will get hit occasionally even if you’re perfect at dodging, so a small shield will save you from wasting revive items
- 10%+ cooldown reduction: You’ll be using dodge and support skills constantly, so extra CDR lets you cycle buffs faster with zero downtime
Phase 1 vs Phase 2: Key Differences to Adjust Your Playstyle
Lifer has two distinct phases, split when his HP hits 50%. Phase 1 is slow and predictable, with long gaps between attacks where you can get 4-5 basic attacks in safely. You can even face tank one regular hit in phase 1 if you have a decent shield, so don’t be afraid to play aggressively when you see an opening. I usually save my burst skills for the end of phase 1, so I can push him to 50% HP quickly without wasting damage on his invulnerable transition animation.
Once he hits 50% HP, he roars, slams his axe into the ground, and enters phase 2, where his attack speed jumps by 30% and he adds a new stomp AOE attack to his rotation. The phase 2 transition roar deals 50% of your max HP as damage to everyone on the field, so make sure you heal your entire team to full right before he hits that 50% threshold, or switch to your shield character to absorb the hit. I learned this the hard way my third run: I had my healer at 12% HP when he transitioned, and she died instantly before I could react, forcing me to reset the fight.
In phase 2, his charge attack also has a much shorter tell: he only slams his axe once instead of twice before charging, so you need to dodge as soon as you see him lift his axe off the ground, not wait for the second slam. You also only get 2-3 basic attacks in between his moves in phase 2, so don’t get greedy for extra damage, or you’ll get caught mid-attack by his next move.
Common Mistakes That Make Lifer Fights Way Harder Than They Need to Be
After talking to 20+ players who struggled with this boss, I found that most wipes happen because of easily avoidable mistakes, not bad gear. The most common mistake is trying to fight Lifer inside the narrow mine tunnels where he spawns. The narrow mine tunnels make it impossible to dodge his charge attack sideways, so you’re guaranteed to get hit if you fight him there. As soon as you aggro him, run out of the tunnel to the open clearing right outside, where you have plenty of space to dodge around his attacks.
Another common mistake is wasting your burst skills right before he does an invulnerable animation. Lifer is completely invulnerable during his phase transition roar, and during the first 2 seconds of his spinning attack windup, so wait until he’s actively attacking or standing still to pop your burst. I used to waste Jiyan’s full burst on his transition animation all the time, which added 2+ minutes to every run.
Don’t sleep on the environmental explosive barrels scattered around the outside clearing either. Each barrel deals 15% of Lifer’s max HP as damage if you shoot it when he’s standing next to it, so you can take off 30% of his total HP before you even attack him directly if you pull him near the two barrels at the tunnel entrance first. It’s a tiny trick that most players miss, but it makes the fight so much faster, especially if you’re running a lower damage F2P team.
You don’t need perfect reflexes or a stacked 5-star team to beat this boss, just a little practice and attention to his tells. The first time I cleared Lifer, I was using a level 60 Jiyan with 4-star artifacts, so if I could pull it off, you definitely can. Next time you head to the Jinzhou mines, keep these tips in mind, and you’ll nail how to defeat lifer wuthering waves on your first or second try.
